As the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) finalises its COVID-19 Business Events Response & Recovery framework, newly appointed independent chair Dr Vanessa Findlay spoke exclusively with CIM about what a recovery strategy for the business event sector looks like.
The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) is offering support to community organisations and educational institutions as the impact of COVID-19 leads to a spike in demand for services. Forced to temporarily close its doors due to legislation that limits gatherings and imposes social distancing, GCCEC has formed a Community Team tasked with leading initiatives to provide much-needed support.

The recent past – 2019 had been a strong year for Australian tourism. Total overnight visitor spend for the year ending September 2019 reached a record $124 billion – up 10% on the year. On these figures, total overnight spend was on track to reach $134 billion by the end of 2020, just short of the $140 billion target set under Tourism 2020.
The need for immediate support – The necessity of shutting down gatherings of people to control the spread of the coronavirus has meant the business events sector is also shut down. Like other sectors that are reliant on people coming together, business events companies have been hit hard and fast by the rapid escalation of the virus around the globe.
