How to ensure inclusive excellence – three key tips

ICC Sydney’s culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion is reflected in its Accessible and Inclusive Events Guide, where event organisers can find these three key tips, and much more to ensure inclusivity for all at events.

Ensure accessibility for all needs, both visible and/or hidden

With 1.3 billion people worldwide, and one in five Australians, experiencing a significant disability today, accessibility and inclusion should form part of every event and venue management plan. Just as it has been built into ICC Sydney’s operating strategies, it is also an essential consideration for event organisers to ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all. By partnering with disability advisory and advocacy groups like Get Skilled Access, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower or Autism Spectrum Australia, you can better understand and improve event operations based on the lived experiences of people with a disability, visible or hidden.

Honour First Nations People, culture, and community

Honouring the traditional custodians of the land where your event takes place is essential for fostering an inclusive and accessible environment. You can support First Nations Peoples by being an inclusive employer, backing First Nations-owned businesses, and ensuring your team undergoes cultural awareness training. In addition to these initiatives, ICC Sydney also welcomes delegates with messages in the Gadigal language, with an Acknowledgement of Country offered to begin meetings and/or events.

Prioritise diversity and education

Building a diverse team with varied skills, backgrounds and perspectives reduces your potential for unconscious bias. Implement key initiatives recognised by Pride in Diversity’s Australian Workplace Equality Index to demonstrate your commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity. For inspiration, look at ICC Sydney’s silver status, which reflects its dedication through a team that speaks 82 languages and includes 42% female, 57.7% male, and 0.3% gender-diverse members, with balanced leadership representation.
